Archaeological evaluation carried out east of Bogshole Lane in 1999 discovered evidence of Late Iron Age and/or Roman activity. Finds comprised 3 sherds of Late Iron Age pottery and 4 sherds of Romano-British pottery recovered as residual material from medieval deposits. 2 sherds of grog-tempered Roman ware and a single sherd of Late Iron Age flint-tempered vessel are listed as having been excavated at the site. 4 struck flints were also identified at the site, alongside a residual flint scraper and a prehistoric potsherd.
Features which may originate from this period include an undated daub-filled pit, and/or a section of ditch. These features are described as having an "early appearance" (from the original report, 1), suggesting that they may have originated from an early phase of occupation at the site. However, daub-filled pits are also known from Anglo-Saxon period sites associated with sunken floored buildings, suggesting that this feature may have originated during a later period. (1)

Excavation in 2001 following the evaluation recorded prehistoric features and a possible Saxon sunken-floor structure. (2)
