Full Description

Medieval features including linear features, a possible enclosure, an earthwork and ditch, and several pits, at land excavated at land between land between Arthur Baker Playing Field and Ashford Road, Charing, Kent. The excavation took place in 2019 in advance of a planning application. The wider site demonstrates "multiphased evidence for agrarian, industrial and domestic activity ranging from the Early Bronze Age through to the post-Medieval period (from the original report (1))". One of the undated features at the site includes a N-S aligned inhumation burial of a 28-38yr old male which cuts a Late Iron Age pit feature.

The features included a possible enclosure bounded by several linear features. The enclosure is likely to have had a NE-SW alignment. The two linear features formed two sides and one corner; they had a average width of 1m and an average depth of 0.25m. The linear features produced pottery dating to 1150-1350 AD.

The enclosure was separated from the rest of the landscape by a large earthwork and flanking ditch feature. The earthwork had a serpentine course and was aligned NW-SE measuring 112x1.80x0.40m. The ditch ran along the south side of the earthwork and measured 1m wide and 0.90m deep. The fill of the ditch contained pottery which dated to around 1150-1350 AD.

One large irregular shaped pit was located north of the earthwork, this was slightly aligned NW-SE, and measured 17.5x10.3x0.58m. The pit is thought to possibly represent a cattle wallow. The tertiary layer within the pit contained animal bone and pottery dated to 1200-1350 AD. The secondary layer within the pit contained pottery dating to 1200-1350 AD.

The other pit had a NS alignment; this feature measured 3.60x0.60x0.07m. The backfill contained charcoal and pottery dating to 1150-1250 AD.

One of the linear features projected from the SW for 8m "before turning slightly northwest and continuing beyond the northwest (from the original report (1))." It had an average width of 0.25m and was around 0.27m deep. The backfill contained pottery dating to between 1250-1350 AD.

Another of the linear features projected from the south "in a NE direction for a length of 17m before terminating (from the original report (1))." On average, the feature had a width of 0.60m and was 0.15m deep. The backfill contained pottery which dated to 1250-1350 AD. (1)
