Possible medieval features including a pit and a possible pit, a layer and a levelling deposit at 52 King Street, Canterbury. The features were uncovered during an evaluation by CAT of the site in advance of building construction. Finds from the site include possible medieval-post-medieval pottery and tile.

The possible medieval features were uncovered in trench 2. These comprised a large possible pit feature which was left largely unexcavated due to its depth (1.29m BGL). This contained a sherd of possible medieval pottery. This pit was overlain by a possible late medieval layer, which was cut by a 15th-16th century pit. The features and layers were overlain by post-medieval layers. Finds from the layers and features include 3 sherds of medieval/late medieval pottery, a glazed floor tile, and a peg tile, both of which date to the medieval/post-medieval period.

The presence of the features, with further archaeology potentially located below these (the natural geology was not reached), will result in archaeological mitigation works for the proposed development. These may involve a continuous watching brief, in order to identify and monitor any new archaeological features. (1)
