Full Description

A Roman deposit and possible Roman pit feature were excavated in 2016 during an archaeological evaluation of land at 74 Wincheap by Canterbury Archaeological Trust.

The Roman deposit "consisted of a fairly homogeneous layer of mid to light yellowish brown silty clay with occasional small inclusions of charcoal and chalk and lesser quantities of oyster shell, flint and a few very small, abraded potsherds of possible Roman date. Most of these finds, as well as a fragment of a copper alloy pin, were recovered from the upper part of the deposit" (from the original report (1)).

The possible Roman pit feature contained two small abraded Roman tile fragments, charcoal and brick inclusions. The pit feature may date from a later period; there was a later period of pit digging during the medieval and post-medieval periods (TR 15 NW 2601) at the site, therefore the finds in the pit which suggested a Roman date may be residual.
