Full Description
Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated medieval occupation layers and features at land adjacent to 54 Northgate.
These features included pits, occupation deposits, a metalled surface, and a wall.
Both pits were unexcavated, with one measuring over 1m wide and the other over 3m in diameter. One of the pits containted three fragments of 13th-14th century pottery (with a combined weight of 38 grams) in its fill.
The occupation deposits contained charcoal and marine shell fragments, with one also containing fragments of 11th-12th century pottery (with a combined weight of 13 grams).
The section of wall was composed of flint pebble and nodule fragments with a hard sandy mortar. The wall ran parallel to the Northgate frontage of the site and was over 0.75m in length by 0.3m in width.
The metalled surface was comprised of flint.(1)
