Full Description

Possible Anglo-Saxon yard and metalling deposits, and occupation deposits were excavated at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2016. The layers have not been definitely dated due to the lack of material excavated from them, apart from one possibly residual fragment of Roman tile. Other fragments of Roman tile have been excavated from the site (TR 15 NE 1970) and are thought to represent Roman activity in the vicinity.
The deposits are comprised of silty clays and metallings, representing a yard, topsoil, and possible occupation deposits.
These deposits were overlain by a layer of soil containing slag, daub, and animal bone, which is comparatively similar to late Anglo-Saxon deposits from the local area. (1)

Another evaluation at the site in 2016 identified evidence for Anglo-Saxon pits and further metalling, alongside a large linear feature which may date from the Anglo-Saxon/early medieval period.
Four pits were identified to the east of the site, alongside a large bowl-shaped feature with metalling across its base which may have held water at some point due to the presence of a level silt layer within its stratigraphy. The silt layer was overlain by a series of soil deposits containing charcoal and domestic refuse including animal remains, oyster shell, Roman brick and tile, iron slag, 9th-10th century pottery, and cess. This was overlain by successive layers of flint gravel metallings and domestic and/or industrial refuse. These features were overlain to the south by flint metalling containing iron slag.
To the west of the site, a N-S aligned hollow way or ditches were identified which may have dated from the Anglo-Saxon period, continuing in use into the medieval period. The feature(s) measured 5m in width by 2.5m in depth and extended beyond the limits of the excavation.

Other finds from the excavation include spindle whorls, quern stone fragments, nails, and pins, it is unclear which period these finds originate from. (2)
