Full Description

"Part of an enclosure dating from the late Bronze Age through to the Iron Age, c 500-350BC, was recorded... abutting the west side of Coldharbour Lane during the construction of the works compound for the Bridge by-pass in 1974. The enclosure was represented by a ditch aligned south-west to north-east which was traced further north into an adjacent orchard. A secondary ditch within the enclosure on the east was described as a bedding trench for a fence. A number of pits were associated with the enclosure, one entirely backfilled with burnt clay, another with layers of clay, ash and burnt flints interspersed with layers of domestic refuse. One pit contained parts of the skeleton of a child. Although no buildings were found the evidence indicates occupation with the disposal of rubbish on the periphery of a settlement. Material from the backfilling of the enclosure ditches also indicated iron-working had been carried on within the settlement" (from the desk based assessment report of a nearby property, 1).
