Full Description
A NE-SW aligned Roman street, possible levelling deposits a ditch, a possible floor, surfaces, and residue from a nearby Roman rampart was excavated at Mitchinson's House, Canterbury in 2016.
The possible levelling deposit may date from the Roman period or possible earlier, however, it may also represent natural deposition.
The Roman street was identified through both the evaluation trenching and the watching brief on geotechnical work; this comprised gravelled metalling and, in one area, was associated with a ditch feature - possibly with the ditch situated over the road surface.
Imported material possibly representing a building platform or floor was also associated with the site. At least three surfaces were also identified at the site, these are undated and are thought to originate from the Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and early medieval periods. (1)
