Full Description
Post-medieval wall facing, wall foundation, and deposits relating to the school were excavated at Mitchinson's House, Canterbury in 2016. The wall which had post-medieval facing may itself be medieval in date as it is thought to be a spine wall for the Almonry Chapel at the site. The wall facing comprised brickwork in the form of "unfrogged pink-red bricks...bonded in an off-white, soft, friable, sandy, lime mortar. The brickwork almost certainly relates to the school use of the chapel after 1573. The brick sizes and mortar bonding suggest a later seventeenth-century date" (from the original report, 1).One of the deposits may form a yard or path and is located adjacent to the Latin or Writing School constructed around 1573; one of the equivalent deposits excavated during earlier investigations was a yard or path surfacing, therefore this deposit may have had a similar function.
One of the demolition deposits (comprising Tudor brick, Caen stone, and Georgian mortar) appears to be associated with the foundation for one of the Aula Nova's buttresses, added in 1573, and it susbsequent removal. Other demolition material present at the site may be related to this removal, or with the demolition of the Almonry Chapel, both occurring in 1865.
Other deposits were formed relating to the use of the school and the construction of Mitchinson's House in 1982.
An 18th-19th century drain was also identified at the site (1).
