Full Description
Medieval and post-medieval features including demolition deposits, a floor, and pits at 30 King Street, Canterbury.
The demolition deposits contained mortar, oyster shell, and carbon, and are suggested to relate to the demolition of a building within the vicinity of the site. These layers are thought to date from 1475-1550 AD.
Overlying these layers was a buried soil horizon of garden soil containing pottery dating between 1475-1550 AD, alongside fragments of peg-tile.
4 pits dating to the medieval period were also present within the trench; the pits measured between 0.30-0.88m in width and 0.09-0.29m in depth. The features contained mortar, and 3 sherds of late medieval pottery dating to 1500-1575 AD.
The pits were overlain by a late medieval/early post-medieval mortar floor dating to around 1500-1550 AD. Overlying this layer was another demolition horizon of mortar and tile debris.
Properties existed in the surrounding area from the medieval period, suggesting that the features may have been associated with activity realting to medieval occupation at, or in the vicinity of, the site. (1)
