Full Description
A possible prehistoric pit and enclosure were excavated at 95-103 Sturry Road, Canterbury during investigations in 2006.
The pit measured around 2m in diameter and 0.68m in depth. The pit contained two fills of sandy clay; the lower fill contained burnt clay, charcoal, manganese, and fire-cracked flint. The upper fill contained fragments of calcined flint and charcoal.
The enclosure was comprised of "three straight lengths of shallow, concave-profiled ditch... which formed the south-western corner of a probable rectangular enclosure which possessed a roughly north-west–south-east alignment" (from the original report, 1). The ditches measured between 1.57-7.40m in length, 0.46-0.70m in width, and 0.10-0.12m in depth. Fragments of calcined flint and struck flint were recovered from deposits associated with these features.
The features at the site were undated, but the finds of struck flint associated with the enclosure could suggest a prehistoric date for this feature. The pit has also been interpreted as possibly prehistoric. (1)
