A shallow ditch of a likley Medieval date was discovered during evaluation trenching on land to the north east of The Length, St Nicholas At Wade ahead of the development of the site. It was located in trench 2 and an a possible continuation of the feature was also seen to the north in trench 1 though this feature was not dated. When viewed together the two ditches appear to form a possible enclosure or boundary within the north-western end of the site. The ditch was north-east/south-west aligned and measured at least 1.63m wide ran for roughly 7m diagonally across the base of the trench. Due to time constraints and the exceedingly dry soil conditions the machine was used to dig a slot through the feature to test the depth and for artefact retrieval. The ditch was approximately 0.45m deep and the fill contained a single pottery sherd dated to the thirteenth century and a worked flint. (information summarised from source) (1)
