Full Description

A group of features including pits, quarries and ditches were discovered during an archaeological evaluation on land off Tothill Street in Minster, Thanet. A number of the features correlated exactly with the geophysical anomalies plotted for the area. The features cut the chalk natural and were sealed below the ploughsoil in the north of the trench, and below a thickening deposit of colluvium southwards, which was up to 0.49m thick. One of the ditches, Although undated, ran parallel to post-medieval boundaries in this part of the landscape, which would suggest a possible similar date. Another ditch cut a post medieval quarry and so is also likely of a similar date. The quarry pit in question correlated exactly with a large, pit-like geophysical anomaly and was sealed below colluvium. The pit was at least 11m in extent and >0.45m deep, and contained a single fill 1906, from which post-medieval pottery, cbm, and residual worked flint were recorded. A small number of chalk pits of 19th century ate are known in the vicinity of the Site, which are clearly recorded on early maps of the area illustrated in the desk-based assessment of the Site. This includes a large quarry pit to the immediate south of the south-west corner of the Site. A group of small pits with a possible medieval date was also uncovered within this trench at the southern end of the site as one contained 11th – 15th century pottery.
