Full Description

Medieval pits, post-holes, and possible ditch were excavated at Canterbury Riverside Project Site 9 during an evaluation and geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental
investigation in August 2016.
One of the features was suggested to represent a sub-circular pit or possible ditch terminal which was 0.60m in width, and 0.70m in depth. This feature contained charcoal within its fill.
A possible ditch at the site extended beyond the limits of the excavation, but measured over 1m in width, and 0.70m in depth.
Four probable/possible pit/post-hole features at the site measured 0.50-1.5m in width and 0.25-0.55m in depth, with two containing charcoal, oyster shell, animal remains, peg-tile, and 12th-13th century pottery.
A linear feature was also present at the site; this feature was aligned SW-NE and measured 2.8m in width and 0.90m in depth, containing CBM, 12-13th century pottery, charcoal, a copper buckle, and animal remains in its fill. This feature may have represented a property boundary ditch or a roadside ditch.
These features have been interpreted as being related to the barton of Christ Church Priory.
The quarry is suggested to date from the medieval or post-medieval period; the feature over 3.4m in width, and 0.40m in depth, containing charcoal, peg-tile, and animal remains. Quarrying is recorded along Sturry Road during the post-medieval period, however, the position of the feature within the stratigraphic sequence suggests that the quarry may be earlier than post-medieval in date. With the absence of dating evidence it can only be dated broadly to the medieval-post-medieval period. Sealing the quarry was a layer of buried topsoil/cultivation layer, with another similar layer sealing other features at the site; the dates of both these layers are also uncertain. (1)
