Full Description

During an archaeological investigation ahead of the construction of Thanet Parkway rail station off Hengist Way, Cliffsend, a wide variety of archaeological features finds and deposits were uncovered. The earliest activity identified at the site dates to the early to middle Neolithic period. A cluster of small pits situated towards the west of the excavation area, were recorded which produced an assemblage of Peterborough Ware of this date. These features cut two earlier north-west to south-east aligned gullies. To the north-west of this cluster, a small north-north-east to south-south-west aligned gully also produced pottery of possible middle Neolithic date. Whilst a single pit, situated over 200m to the north-east, yielded middle Neolithic Peterborough Ware. A small assemblage of early to middle Neolithic pottery was also included in a potential placed deposit in a middle to late Bronze Age feature. (information summarsed from source) (1)
