Full Description

(1) Iron Age: Within the excavation area, three pits and two ditches were identified and excavated.
Pits: Pit [72] Sub-circular, 3.04m in diameter and 0.21m deep with concaved sides and base - two sherds of Earlier Iron Age pottery were exacavted from this pit. Pit [3/008] sub-circular, 1.52m in diameter and 0.2m deep - single Iron Age sherd retrieved. Pit [4/010] large, 2.65m in diameter and 0.23m deep with concave sides and a flat base - Middle/Late Iron Age pottery retrieved.

Ditches: Ditch [G1] NW-SSE, c. 40m long with a dog-leg. 1.2m wide and 0.2m deep with shallow, sloping sides and a concave base - Two later prehistoric pottery sherds providing dating evidence. Ditch [G2] NW-SE, unlikely to be contemprary with G1 due to alignment - single pottery sherd of possible prehistoric date.

Interpretation of the ditches thus far is that they are field boundaries and the inclusion of the pits suggest that these features may have formed part of an Iron Age farmstead and field system.

Roman: Urned cremation burial excavated from the north of the excavation area and had been placed at the base of pit [3/005]. A dish and broken flagon were also placed adjacent to the urn within the pit. The pottery excavated from the pit were Early Roman in date with a terminus post quem of c. AD 70. Burnt human bone was recovered from the contents of the urn and was collected as an environmental sample. Presence of all fragments from skeletal areas were noted (skull, axial, upper limb and lower limb) noted. Charcoal also present in the sample.

Pits:
To the north-east of the excavation area, six large sub circular pits were identified - five of which formed an approximate line.
To the Western part of the excavation area, was a large pit measuring 5.4m diameter - initially thought to be two ditches. This large put contained fired clay fragments of an oven plate.
The southern half of the excavation area consisted of a further seven pits all of which contained Roman pottery. The finds excavated from these pits indicate that they were likely refuse pits.

The features identified as well as the finds suggest that this was potentially some form of Roman settlement.
