Full Description
Prehistoric agricultural features including pits, ditches, and a structure, were excavated at Shelford Farm Estate, Canterbury in 2001-2002.
A linear group of four ditch segments thought to represent an enclosure and three pits dating to 1500-50 BC was excavated, alongside a possible buried soil horizon of the same date. Finds associated with this phase of activity included over 150 sherds of flint tempered pottery (weighing almost 1.65kg), and around 1000 fragments of struck flint. The majority of these finds were residual on unstratified, however, with around 30 fragments of struck flint and a small quantity of flint tempered pottery sherds directly associated with the ditches and pits.
Features associated with occupation at the site in the late 1st century included a series of truncated ditches potentially representing more enclosures and a drainage ditch, a probable four-posted structure, and some isolated pits. The ditches were situated along E-W and N-S alignments. The probable structure measured around 3.5m square and was associated with two pits and a possible post-hole.
Finds associated with this phase of occupation included grog-tempered Belgic ware pottery. (1)
