Full Description
A South Eastern Railway company’s Ramsgate Town Station, (originally called Ramsgate Station) was opened as a terminus station on the13th April 1846.
On the 1st December 1846, the line was extended to Margate Sands. Trains had to reverse at Ramsgate to continue their journey to Margate Sands.
Southern Railway company took over South Easter Railway’s operations on the 1st January 1923 and on 2nd July 1926, Southern Railway opened a new line and station.
The station was demolished immediately after closure and the site of the station is now covered by housing development, erasing all trace of the railway.
A stub end of the line remains as two carriage sidings adjacent to the south of the present station terminating at Wilfred Road. (1-4)
The monument polygon represents the extent of the railway terminal complex in 1879.
The map 1879 map shows that in addition to the rail lines and station, the railway terminal complex comprised, store house, goods shed, engine shed, forge, coal office, stone & timber yard, ice house, ale store, South Eastern Works, water tank and offices. (5-6)
