Full Description
Roman building remains were excavated at the South Precincts, Canterbury in 2016-2017.
These included a N-S aligned mortared flint wall to the west of the site. This feature was associated with a robber cut which had removed the southern length of the wall, a flint metalled surface, and occupation material to the north dating from the Roman period. Another Roman wall aligned NW-SE associated with a clay floor surface and occupation material was located towards the east of the other features. One of the occupation deposits contained oyster shell and charcoal fragments.
These features were overlain by demolition deposits thought to date from later 3rd/4th century containing building material including mortar, brick, tile, daub, painted plaster, flint, tesserae, and pottery.
A borehole survey carried out alongside the excavation identified a Roman ground surface and/or a building platform at the site. The layer contained fragments of oyster shell, mortar, tile, and charcoal.
The building remains have been interpreted as potentially being associated with Roman town houses, as similar structures have been excavated in the vicinity of the site during previous work. (1)
