Full Description

Medieval ditches and gullies, alongside artefacts related to domestic settlement, were excavated at Old House, Underdown Lane, Herne Bay during an evaluation in 1999.

Medieval features are limited to one trench, which also contains a number of undated archaeological features. These may be contemporary in date due to their association with and similarity to medieval features at the site. Medieval and probable medieval ditches/gullies had recorded dimensions of 0.78-2.05m in width and 0.14-0.60m in depth. Three ditches and two gullies were recorded, many of which contained pottery dating to the 13th century, and some of which were sealed by a later containing medieval roof tile dating to the later 14th century. Pottery excavated from the fill of these features generally comprised Tyler Hill and shelly-sandy wares; the sherds mostly originated from cooking pots, jugs, and 1-2 bowls.

Another feature thought to date from the medieval period comprised a deposit of oyster shell and burnt flint aligned E-W and with a recorded width of 3.65m. This may represent a deposit of domestic waste associated with medieval occupation in the vicinity of the site, or may represent the surfacing of a road or trackway. The burnt flint may have been associated with a hearth. (1)
