Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation which was carried out on land off Reading Road, in Broadstairs, Thanet, ahead of the development of the site, some evidence for Prehistoric and Roman activity was uncovered. The earliest evidence for human activity on site is represented by a ditch in Trench 9 which produced several pieces of worked and burnt flint, suggesting that the feature may be prehistoric in date. It was the most substantial ditch on site, with both the greatest width and depth, measuring 1.80m wide and approximately 0.90m deep. The ditch contained two fills; a mid grey-brown sandy silty clay as the basal fill and a mid grey/yellowish-brown silty clay as the upper fill. The only Roman artefact recovered on site was a tile from a ditch in Trench 10. This ditch ran approximately north-east to southwest across the south-east end of the trench. It contained a single fill of mid to dark grey-brown clayey silt. The artefact was identified as a Roman tegula (roof tile), although with some uncertainty; its sandy fabric is unusual and very soft, having probably been overfired. It dates the ditch to the Roman period. Further ditches and other features including pits were uncovered at this site but have remained undated, it is possible that some of these may also belong to the prehsitoric or Roman periods.
