Monument record TR 36 NE 2528 - Late Iron Age/Roman Features, Manston Green

Summary

During an archaeological evaluation carried out at Manston Green, the most prolific period of activity appears to date to the late Iron Age and early Romano-British periods. 16 of the 43 trenches revealed featurres dating to this period, the features include pits, ditches/gullies, post holes and possible quarries. These features relate to activity in the fileds adjacent to this. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation carried out in 2023 at Manston Green (Manston Road) near Ramsgate, it was revealed that the most prolific period of activity on the site related to the late Iron Age and early Romano-British periods. Features pertaining to this period were identified in 16 of the 43 trenches. Across the site, the remains largely comprised pits and ditches/gullies, with a small number of post-holes and potential quarries also recorded (though these latter features could be later in date). Ditches [1302], [1412], [2102], 3211] and [3809] were positively identified as late Iron Age/Romano-British though it is suggested that a significant proportion of the undated ditches may also be of this period. This is particularly apparent in trench 13 where ditches [1302] and [1306] would seem to be later re-cuts of earlier ditch [1304]. While only one feature, post-hole [707] was positively identified to this period in trench 7, it is thought likely that many of the remaining features (for example similarly sized post-hole [704] and ditch [706]) are likely of similar date. Two pits, one large [1408] and one much smaller [1410] were identified in trench 14, with a potential shallow quarry [1510] lying to the east. Another potential quarry lay within trench 33 [3309], and another in trench 38 [3807] with all of these features potentially later in date. The most obvious concentration of clearly late Iron Age/Romano-British features lay along the northern boundary of the site. Here a number of pits [3510], [3607], [3622], and [3811], pit cluster [3624] together with post-hole [3616] were identified. It seems likely that other features in this part of the site, for example pit [3815] and post-holes [3704], [3706] and [3708] may be of similar date. A large number of the undated features that lie within the PDA are likely also of this period. It is assumed that all of these features relate to the activity identified on the recently investigated adjacent Phase 1 road junction site. On that site a north-west to south-east aligned trackway was identified, the line of which runs immediately past the south-west corner of the PDA. Other remains on the road junction site comprised pits, ditches/gullies, sunken-featured buildings and a potential quarry. It seems likely that settlement features in the south-west corner of the present site are associated with the trackway. In particular, a pair of undated ditches in trench 7 run perpendicular to this feature and perhaps represent the remains of a second heavily truncated trackway/droveway of late Iron Age/Roman date. Topographically, these features lie in the highest part of the site in an area where Head deposits were generally patchy or absent. The features encountered in the south-western part of the site are generally shallow, having been truncated by agricultural ploughing. A further concentration of features dating to this period was located on the north and east sides of the PDA, with these forming a continuation of settlement activity located on the adjacent former allotments site. In addition, it is assumed that many of the undated features (principally ditches) may also relate to this phase of activity. (1) (information summarised from source)
