Full Description

A medieval field system and an associated sunken featured building were identified at Garden Cottage, Monkton during an evaluation in 2020. (Location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information). The sunken featured building has been broadly dated to the medieval period due to the truncation which it has undergone, however, no artefactual evidence has been used to date them.

Five medieval and probable medieval ditches identified at the site measured between 0.44-2.60m in width and 0.16-0.57m in depth. Two of the ditches were aligned E-W, two were aligned NW-SE, and one was aligned NE-SW. The ditches are thought to have originally made up part of a medieval field system aligned N-S running parallel to Minster Road.

The sunken featured building was represented by a feature visible over an area of 4x1.5m and measured up to 0.20-0.30m in depth. The building cut one of the medieval ditches at the site, suggesting that it post-dated this feature.

Finds associated with the site include medieval and post-medieval brick and peg-tile fragments identified within subsoil and topsoil deposits. A single small fragment of animal bone was associated with the fill of one of the medieval ditches.

Other features identified at the site include a post-medieval brick structure possibly representing a boundary wall at the site, undated ditches, and several modern features of unknown function. (1)
