Full Description

An early-middle Iron Age hollow way and pit were excavated at Hartsdown Academy, Margate during en evaluation in 2018. A series of linear features/ditches dating to the mid-late Iron Age were also identified at the site. These are thought to represent probable field boundaries. (Location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information).

The features were located to the central and southern areas of the site. At least three (possibly four) ditches were identified at the site. These features were aligned SW-NE, N-S, and NW-SE. Their recorded widths were between 1.20-4.30m, and had recorded depths of between 0.32-0.70m. Several of the ditches had U-shaped bases.

One circular pit with a U-shaped profile was recorded which measured 0.97–1.10m in diameter and had a surviving depth of 0.22m. The pit contained fragments of daub within its fill.

A linear feature – a possible hollow way – was also identified at the site. This had a postulated alignment of NNW-SSE, a probable width of around 5m, and a depth of 0.42m.

Finds recovered from the site included around 40 sherds of later prehistoric pottery, around 29 fragments of worked flint and one fragment of worked stone, 8 fragments of burnt flint, ceramic building material, and two fragments of animal bone were recovered from features at the site. Some of the pottery sherds originated from a perforated plaque, a burnished bowl, a carninated bowl, alongside several jars.

An earlier feature identified at the site comprised a probable Bronze Age ring ditch (TR 36 NW 1378). (1)
