Full Description
Roman ditches and a pit were excavated at The Nurseries, Ashford during an evaluation in 2024.
Three ditches were excavated at the site. Two of these was dated to the Roman period, one has been interpreted as Roman or earlier in date due to the finds associated with it and the stratigraphic sequence. The ditches measured 2.4m+ in length, 0.65-1.08m in width, and 0.2-0.25m in depth. Finds associated with these features include Roman pottery dating between the 1st century BC – 2nd century AD.
One sub-oval pit dated to the Roman period or earlier was also identified at the site. The feature was not excavated due to flooding in the trench, however, it was observed to cover an area of 1.92m in length, and 1.8m in width. (1)
