Full Description

A group of features including a large irregular feature and some ditches were located during an archaeological evaluation which was carried out on land at Haine Lodge, off Spratling Road, Ramsgate. Some of these features appear to date to the Early Medieval period.

An irregular shaped feature was partly exposed in Trench 3. It may resemble the pits recorded during the large evaluation that took place in 2020 to the immediate south of Spratling Lane: these pits were interpreted as likely tree throws of trees grubbed out from a former orchard, and the OS map for 1937
shows that this land use extended across the road into the site. However, investigation of this feature produced the largest quantity of pottery recovered on site from any one context (9 sherds in total), which suggests that it is more likely to be archaeological in origin. The pottery was of possible late Anglo-Saxon to early medieval date. The remaining features on site were all linear features, comprising a broadly north– south aligned ditch in Trench 7, a roughly west-east aligned ditch in Trench 5 and Trench 8, and a parallel gully to the immediate north of the ditch in Trench 5. The
gully is undated, as is the probable ditch in Trench 8, but the other two ditches produced pottery, again of possible late Anglo-Saxon to early medieval date. The ditches are likely to have served as field boundaries of a field system, with the gully having perhaps been an associated drainage ditch. A medieval field system was encountered in the earlier evaluation across the road and interpreted as being associated with the historic farmsteads of Spratling Court Farm and Spratling Street
Farm to the immediate west. The ditches on site may be viewed as an extension of this field system, although the north–south aligned ditch in Trench 7 does not appear to have been picked up in the 2020 evaluation. (information summarised from source) (1)
