Full Description

Trackways, enclosures, field boundaries and pits forming part of a settlement of Iron Age/Roman date were visible as cropmarks in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 14-APR-2015 and EARTH.GOOGLE.COM XX-JUL-2013. Aspects of this complex of features either side of the A253 between Sarre and Gore Street have been previously recorded in MKE80431 and MWX43172. Excavations in the environs have uncovered features and material culture of Iron Age/Roman date (see MKE15444 and MKE 6462). Monuments of presumed similar date to the west including MKE76272, MKE123943 and MKE123942 are probably related.

The cropmark complex includes a rectilinear enclosure approximately 35m long centred at TR 2675 6496, a small sub-divided enclosure measuring about 13.3m long at TR 6273 6493 and a small rectilinear enclosure centred at TR 2676 6490 measuring nearly 9m long. A possible building is centred at TR 2677 6487. These features are all to the south of the A road. To the north, two sides of another enclosure are visible, its south-west corner located at TR 2678 6507.

Long ditched field boundaries and fragments of at least two trackways tend to a roughly north-south alignment, although slight differences in orientation may suggest phasing in the arrangement of this field system. Evidence for the southern end of the long, sinuous field boundary described in record MWX43172 could not be confirmed in the available aerial sources.

The features are dominated by more than 150 pits. In the environs of TR 2676 6502, a number of small pits are so closely clustered that they cannot easily be recorded individually and have been mapped in overall extent only.

These features was mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (1-2)
