Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation carried out on land off North Foreland Road in Broadstairs, an array of features were uncovered which appear to represent activity dating to the later bronze age and Iron Age, some of which may relate to settlement in this location. Discrete features (pits or post-holes, but also a stake hole) were the most common feature type, having been recorded in every trench. Obvious clusters were seen in the middle of Trench 9, the east end of Trench 10 and the south end of Trench 12. No patterns were observed in their arrangement and their function is unknown; one pit in trench 10 may, however, have been for refuse disposal, having contained animal bone. Linear features appeared in Trenches 7, 9 and 12 and totalled five in number. Most features were undated, the exceptions were the five discrete cut features which all produced pottery spot dated t the late Bronze Age/Iron Age. The features uncovered by the 2023 evaluation, whilst predominantly undated, are in keeping with the archaeology that was recorded across the site in the 2006 evaluation and again in 2016, within the south-east corner of the site. Each previous phase of archaeological fieldwork exposed Middle Iron Age features (ditches, pits and post-holes) representing domestic or agricultural activity associated with nearby settlement.
