Full Description
Late Iron Age and Roman features were excavated during an evaluation at Herne Bay Golf Course, Herne Bay in 2015. Features identified at the site comprised two linears, one pit, one ditch, and one undetermined feature. These were dated by their association with finds of Roman pottery. Many other features at the site remain undated and/or unexcavated, some of which may also be Late Iron Age/Roman in origin.
Degraded fragments of late Iron Age pottery or daub identified in the fill of a cremation burial, suggesting that there may have been activity at the site in the period directly before Roman occupation.
The site is thought to have formed part of "a Romano-British landscape of enclosures and settlement" (from the original report, 1). Finds including pottery, burnt flint, daub, and charcoal were identified within Roman features. Small quantities of marine shell and animal remains were identified at the site, however, these were undated so could have originated from any period between the prehistoric and the post-medieval. During a phase 2 evaluation carried out in 2016, further late Iron Age and Roman finds and features were excavated at the site. These included a linear feature, the fill of a hollow way, and several pits. Finds associated with the features included Roman pottery and tile. (2)
