Monument record TQ 67 SE 1308 - The cropmark trace of a former field boundary recorded on the 1st editon OS map

Summary

The cropmark trace of a former field boundary recorded on the 1st editon OS map. The cropmark trace of this could be seen as was seen as a ditch extending for approximately 230m on a NE-SW alignment. Aerial photographs taken in 1951 show what appears to be a south-western continuation of this ditch which is itself crossed by the cropmark of an east-west ditch. Faint traces of banks alongside these ditches can also be seen. The ditch appears to skirt closely around a large pit measuring 10m x 13m which may be of later prehistoric or Roman date (also seen as a cropmark). The ditch post-dates the pit, but was dug whilst the pit was still open suggesting the boundary may have earlier origins. These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
