Full Description
A Roman ditch and a post-medieval track with possible Roman origins were identified on land east of Nackington Road, Canterbury during an evaluation in 2018.
The Roman ditch was aligned NW-SE, measured 1m in width, and 0.21m in depth, and contained an asssemblage of finds in its fill including "pottery, ceramic building material [tegulae and imbreces], glass, struck flint, fired clay, and fired cracked flint. Except for the struck flint elements that
date to the prehistoric period, all the assemblage is Roman. Both the pottery assemblage and the building material suggest a date of late 1st to early 2nd century AD. The glass dates from c.AD 43 to the end of the second century" (from the original report, 1).
The trackway comprised a NW-SE aligned cobbled surface measuring around 4.0m in width with associated gullies, ditches, and possible wheel ruts. Finds associated with the track included pottery, animal remains, ceramic building material, and clay pipes dating to the post-medieval period. Roman ceramic building material was also identified in association with the track, however, this was considered likely to be residual in nature. The trackway is known to have been used in the post-medieval period, however, the presence of Roman artefacts may indicate a potentially earlier origin. (1)
