Full Description

Possible Roman features comprising two ditches and a pit were identified during an evaluation at Howe Barracks, Canterbury in 2016. The ditches were aligned NW-SE and measured 1.37-1.55m in width, and 0.32-0.55m in depth. The pit measured 2.05m in diameter and 0.25m in depth.
A small quantity of tile and three sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from across the site, one of which was identified within one of the ditches. This could have been residual in nature due to its worn appearance. Two of the sherds originated from the same jar. (1)

The alignment of the ditches indicated that they formed part of a rectilinear field system. The fills of the features contained around 14 sherds of early Roman pottery and ceramic building material and were aligned parallel/perpendicular to the course of the adjacent Roman road, suggesting that the features were probably early Roman in date. Other finds associated with the fills of the features include a lead spindlewhorl and animal bone. (2)
