Full Description

A middle Bronze Age and Iron Age field system, trackway, and pits were excavated on land to the east of Bogshole Lane, Herne Bay, in 2001. Activity during this period at the site was split into four phases.

The first phase comprised the creation of a metalled trackway aligned NE-SW, the digging of two pits (up to 0.65m in diameter, and 0.30m in depth), and two ditches aligned NE-SW and NW-SE (up to 1.6m in width and and 0.4m in depth).

The second phase comprised the cutting of three ditches 0.70-0.80m wide and 0.28-0.50m deep which formed part of an early field system.

The third phase of activity was characterised by the cutting of a large number of pits forming an area around 15m in diameter. "Two main features types were noted. The majority of features consisted of a range of ovoid pits varying greatly in size between 0.57-9.52m in diameter and between 0.08-2.98m deep. The second type consisted of ovoid post-pits, varying in size between 0.30-1.47m in diameter and between 0.12-0.30m in depth, and characterised with a distinctive fill of compacted daub and occasional fragments of charcoal" (from the original report, 1). The function of the pit complex is unknown. Three intercutting pits measuring 1-3m in diameter, 0.08-0.8m in depth were identified 2m to the north of the main pit complex.
A series of five boundary ditches measuring 6.7-9.60m+ in length, 1.21-2.5m in width, and 0.23-1.21m in depth were dug during this phase of activity, alongside a linear feature which may have formed part of a ditch, measuring 2.39m in length, 1.23m in width, and 0.10m in depth. A daub-filled post-pit (diameter of 1.10m and depth of 0.18m) cut into the surface of the metalled trackway.
The pit containing the Bronze Age hoard identified during the 1999 excavation was re-excavated during this phase of activity at the site. The feature was cut into the upper fill of one of the boundary ditches, providing a terminus ante quem for features established during this phase of activity.

One feature was identified during the final phase of activity at the site. This comprised a NE-SW aligned boundary ditch measuring 11.4m+ in length, 1.20m in width, and 0.45m in depth.

A possible cremation was identified during environmental sampling at the site. The cremation was cut into a prehistoric gully.

Finds recovered from the prehistoric phases of activity at the site comprised an assemblage of 58 pieces of struck flint (46 of which originated from the fills of prehistoric features), 271 sherds of prehistoric pottery (possibly late Bronze Age in date) weighing 2.2kg, animal remains (pig and cattle bone gnawed by dogs), burnt flint, and a late Bronze Age - early Iron Age Lower Greensand Saddle Quern.

Environmental sampling of prehistoric contexts recovered further finds including burnt flint, daub, calcined bone (from a possible cremation in one of the gullies), a small assemblage of charred plant remains, and charcoal. (1)
