Full Description
Iron Age ditches and pits forming part of a field system were identified during excavations at Iwade, Swale in 2009.
A series of pits excavated at the site have bene interpreted as features representing a phase of land clearance carried out in the mid-late Iron Age prior to the establishment of a field system. The field system was represented by two ditches forming elements of the south and west sides of a field at least 216m square. One ditch measured 23m in length, the other over 13m. Following ploughing and erosion of the site, both features had been reduced in depth, with the greatest recorded depth measuring 0.38m.
Similar late Iron Age features are known in the surrounding area, suggesting that this site may be part of a wider landscape of settlement and agricultural land use. (1)
