Full Description

Features associated with a possible medieval settlement was identified at Preston Skreens, Minster during an evaluation carried out in 2017. A pit and a ditch forming part of a field system were excavated, alongside an undated pit.

The pits measured 0.92-1.06m in length, 0.88-0.40m in width, and 0.07-0.12m in depth, and the ditch measured 2m in width, and 0.34m. The medieval pit and ditch contained fragments of pottery, with 19 sherds recovered during the evaluation dating to the early-late medieval period. Other artefacts associated with the fills of the features included a single iron nail, a fragment of medieval roof tile, and six fragments of bone.

The medieval pit also contained gravel interpreted as packing material. This has been interpreted by the authors of the report as potentially representing a post-hole for a structure. The proximity of the site to the nearby medieval abbey, and the alignment of the ditch with the road leading up to the abbey, have led to the interpretation of the features as possibly representing part of the wider settlement around this site.
