Full Description
Early to later medieval building features, deposits, and pits, were identified during excavations carried out at 68 Stour Street, Canterbury.
Early deposits at the site dated from the medieval period and were associated with a phase of pit digging. The earliest structure at the site comprised a stone built early medieval structure with an open hall and two hearths which were found to intercut one another during excavation of the feature. A series of construction trenches and foundations for walls were also identified, including a substantial chalk block wall parallel to Stour Street forming the rear wall of the structure, a dwarf wall, and partition walls to divide the rooms within the building. A number of these internal wall were identified, one of which subdivided the building into two halves. Floor deposits largely formed of clay were also excavated during the investigations, alongside other features relating to the building included pits, post-holes, rubbish pits.
Features associated with another possible structure were identified existing to the west wall of the stone building, possibly representing a separate house or an extension to the earlier building.
Finds associated with medieval layers and deposits at the site included charcoal, oyster, alongside brick and tile fragments. (1)
