Full Description
Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age ditches, a pit, and a buried land surface were identified during an evaluation carried out at Stones Farm, Sittingbourne in 2018. The series of ditches were dated to the earliest Iron Age and probably formed a land boundary or a field system. A buried soil horizon up to 0.24m in depth was excavated. This layer overlay three undated features, and contained a Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age worked flint assemblage. The features beneath the soil horizon comprised two pits and a ditch which are likely to be earlier in date than the overlying layer of colluvium. Artefacts dating to this period identified during the evaluation included pottery, worked flint, and burnt (fire cracked flint).
Features dating to the Early Bronze Age (TQ 96 SW 1299) were identified during the excavation, and an extensive Late Iron Age and Roman settlement (TQ 96 SW 1301) was also excavated at the site, indicating an extensive period of occupation spanning a number of centuries. (1)
