Full Description
A series of medieval ditches associated with pastoral land division were identified during an evaluation carried out at Stones Farm, Sittingbourne in 2018. These features were interpreted (1) as boundary features, potentially related to activity pre-dating or associated with the farmstead at Stone Farm.
Artefactual evidence recovered from the fills of the features included pottery dating between the 12th-14th century. Two gullies and two pits also contained contemporary pottery, suggesting that these features were also associated with medieval occupation at the site.
The farmstead at Stone Farm was dated to the mid post-medieval period, however its exact origins are unknown and the presence of later medieval features at the site may represent activity associated with the origins of the farmstead. (1)
