Full Description
Two large pits and a number of other features are visible as cropmarks on photographs taken on July 16th 2001. The pits themselves are 35m and 45m across respectively, and show more clearly as large pits on earlier photographs from 1982. The 2001 photographs also show a number of other features, some of which may be associated with the pits. The general picture is muddied by the soil and crop conditions, which make it difficult to be sure that any of the features visible are of archaeological origin. The pits presumably represent some form of quarrying, and one presumes, given the location, that it was chalk being extracted. (1, 2)
