Monument record TQ 87 NW 1298 - Undated boundaries, St Mary Hoo

Summary

The cropmark remains of linear ditches, probably former boundaries of uncertain date mapped from aerial photographs taken by English Heritage in June 2011 as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The main two elements of these features are a fragmented ditch aligned ENE-WSW which can be traced for c.240m, its eastern end meeting a perpendicular fragmented ditch of c.140m in length. This second ditch is parallel to a linear embanked boundary, part of a fragmented system of former boundaries mapped from lidar imagery and recorded separately in NMR Monument number 1536946. There appears to be an association between these linears, but they may not necessarily be contemporary features. The fragmented traces of a number of other ditches were seen to cross and branch from the main ENE-WSW aligned ditch. The cropmark traces of two large sub-circular pits were also noted close to these ditches at TQ 8129 7807 and TQ 8128 7805. They have diameters of 8.7m and 6.7m respectively.
