Full Description
A249 Stockbridge - Brenzett improvement. Feburary 1992 fieldwalking survey along provisional line of new road. AConcentrations of medieval/post-medieval artifacts were noted with a preponderance of sherds in the date ranges 1300-1450 and 1375-1550. This concentration coinsides with a concerntration of possible building stone (Kentish Ragstone), some bone and shell and may indicate the presence of a settlement site. C14-16. (1)
As a result of the fieldwalking an evaluation trench was dug (tr0115305 to 01163032) which revealled evidence of occupation in the form of rubbish pits along with several ditches excavated along the W side of the Stockbridge to Brenzett road. Pottery of C13-14 date found in fill. No evidence of buildings noted but quantities of building stone were observed during field walking of fields adjacent. (2)
