Monument record TQ 67 SE 34 - Romano-British occupation area
Summary
Gas main trenching revealed an extensive complex of ditches and/or rubbish pits associated with flint wall footings and Roman pottery. The cropmark traces of the Roman settlement sectioned by this pipeline were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The site appeared as two large conjoined rectilinear ditch-defined enclosures with traces of sub-divisions, but no building remans visible. The two enclosures measured approximately 100m x 97m and 30m x 60m. The cropmarks suggest a number of phases of development are present. Ditches cut through the settlement enclosure and a number of probable field boundaries forming a field system (NMR Monument: 764396) can be seen extending to the south, cut by a curving trackway (NMR Monument: 765312), but it is not clear if these are contemporary with the Roman site.
