Full Description

In 1990 an assessment prior to the construction of Thanet Way took place. During field walking it was observed that two places contained dense scatter of burnt flints close to Radfall Corner; the other site is to the south east of Radfall corner. There suggest the presence of occupation sites, yet no struck or worked flint suggests that the sites may be later prehistoric (i.e. Late Bronze Age or Iron Age). There is also a stream nearby further suggesting prehistoric occupation and the concentration of burnt flints (used as 'pot-boilers'). Extensive trenching here is recommended. No prehistoric pottery survives. (1)

In 1991 an archaeological evaluation by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at various sites along the route of Thanet Way. The site is a possible prehistoric one located by a burnt flint scatter. No archaeological evidence was discerned due to immediate commencement of ploughing, thus further investigation was abandoned, so the site remains considered at unevaluated. (2)

In 1995 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out excavations on three selected areas along the Thanet Way. Site 7 was a hilltop location south of South Street and west of Radfall Road. An extensive concentration of pits, consolidation layers, possible post holes, two hearths and a ditch were all located in the north and west of the site. It was interpreted as a hilltop settlement, perhaps a farmstead. Daub and pot sherds support this. The site consisted of a circular hut surrounded by pits. However the features had been severely truncated which made identification difficult. The first phase of settlement was dated to the Late Bronze Age/ Iron Age (c.850/750-600 B.C.) on the basis of ceramic material. Pre-Conquest Belgic pottery also was recovered from a pit, so was iron slag, animal bone and charcoal. There was also a apparently deliberately buried complete vessel. With the exception of the 'Belgic' sherds all the pottery on the site was Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. A large fragment and several smaller fragments of iron slag recovered provided possible evidence for iron-working inside and contemporary with the settlement. Two periods of occupation are present; a dominant late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and a minor 'Belgic' element. (3)
