Monument record TQ 57 SW 191 - Romano-British Channel and Gully, Lowfield St, Dartford

Summary

A broad, neatly-cut water channel was discovered, containing Romano-British pottery, flint flakes and heat-shattered stones. The feature seems to have been dug and silted during the Romano-British period (dated from pottery found). A narrow gully was also located, containing a mortarium, flint flakes, heat-cracked stones and animal bones. This was probably dug and silted during the life of the channel, to which it is certainly related.

Full Description

A broad, neatly-cut water channel was discovered, containing Romano-British pottery, flint flakes and heat-shattered stones. The feature seems to have been dug and silted-up during the Romano-British period. A narrow gully was also located, containing Romano-British mortarium, flint flakes, heat-cracked stones and animal bones. This was probably dug and silted during the life of the channel, to which it is certainly related. (1-2)

Further work was undertaken across the site in 1997-1998. A small number of features of Romano-British date were found to be largely ditches. These may have served to delineate boundaries and assisted drainage. Pottery recovered from the features and across the site consisted of native flint-tempered sherds; the size of which and condition of suggesting a settlement nearby. The date of the site is suggested at c.75-100 to 250-300AD. Small fragments of basalt lava quern were also found.(3)
