Full Description
The results from this area clearly illustrate the variation in magnetic response recorded across the application area. The eastern extension of the survey block contains a concentration of strong magnetic anomalies, indicating a continuation of the archaeological complex recorded in site 'A' (TR 02 SW 54). Although the density of the responses in this arwa complicates interpretation of the data, a number of pit anomalies and linear responses, including double ditch anomalies, have been detected. The ditch type anomaly (C) is particularly magnetically strong and may indicate a boundary to the settlement complex.
With the exception of a few ill-defined responses, there is clearly a noticeable decline in magnetic response to the west of anomaly (C). The majority of the responses are broad and diffuse and, given the irregular pattern, they are considered to reflect subsurface variations in the underlying geology.
Along the western edge of the survey area a magnetically strong but broad linear response has been recorded. Although an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out, it is likely that this response represent the line of a former palaeochannel.
No anomalies have been detected that can be siad to relate to the enclosure identified as a cropmark on APs. Survey over the visible earthworks contained within the survey area produced no significant response.
Ferrous disturbance has been produced by fences around trees in the southern and western parts of the survey area and adjacent boundaries. A scatter of ferrous anomalies in the northeastern corner of the survey area (D) is part of a band of disturbance along a row of electricity poles that run north to the railway line. It is likel;y to be modern and may indicate the course of a former farm track.(1)
