Full Description

Several pits, ditches and postholes and a hearth dating to the late 1st century AD were found during an evaluation in 1998. (1)

During a watching brief in 1999 additional features were found. Most of the building work at this stage was carried out at levels above the Roman archaeological deposits but deeper foundations did encounter three small pits and an additional ditch. Pottery from the pits and ditches dated to c. AD 55-150. A further 21 pot sherds from topsoil and builder's spoil dated to c. AD 1-60, suggesting a Late Iron Age-early Roman date for occupation of the site. Evidence of iron working was found in the form of hammerscale from one of the pits. (2)
