Full Description

Excavations in 1842 located the site of a supposed Romano-British walled cemetery with towers. (TQ 75 SE 2). An Evaluation to the east of Romano-British walled cemetery in 1996 only revealled two poss RB ditches and a single pit or post-hole with a number of sherds of early AS pot in the fill c.450-700 AD.(1)

A geophysics report at the site in 1998 produced limited positive findings and led to further excavation. (2)

Evaluation work in March 1998 identified more Romano-British field drainage ditches and a large ditch with pottery sherds and two loom weights(TQ 75 SE 131). Although the pottery in the report was identified as being of LIA date it is thought, and the report does suggest this, that they could also be of AS date as well due to the similarity of the sherds to those found in the 1996 SEAS evaluation of the site. The location of the cemetery was not positivly identified. (3)
