Full Description
During trenching on the site of the former C&A department store a number of archaeological features were discovered in one of the trenches. Along with deposits and structures of eighteen to twentieth century date were pits and wall foundations of early post-medieval date. With in one of the wall foundations was found a quanitity of medieval dressed stonework including three pieces of carved human figures. The bulk of the stone pieces recovered were of either Caen stone or Reigate type stone and included numerous parts of window and door surrounds with fragements of window tracery. No detail analysis has taken place but they seem to be post-Norman in date. The three human carved stones consisted of a small Caen stone wall corbel in the form of a human head, the upper part of a clothed body in Reigate-type stone, and the carving of a figure seated on a throne, perhaps an archbishop (Becket?). Stylistically this figure appears to be of Norman date.(1)
