Full Description

Evidence of a multi-period occupation site uncovered during excavations by Wessex Archaeology and Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1999 and 2000 on adjoining sites. Evidence of the long use of this location is evident from associated features and finds from the Late Mesolithic, Neolithic, Early Bronze Age and Romano-British. (2) (See TQ 85 SE 131,132 & 141)

In January 1999 an evaluation by Wessex yielded a ditch and pit of probable Mid-Late BA, a tree-throw of Mid Neolithic date and a possible hearth of unknown date. (1)

This led to an excavation in April and May opening up a larger area of the site. Along with evidence of a Mesolithic flint working site a pit, diameter 4m and a narrow north-west - south-east aligned ditch, cutting Mesolithic features, 18m long were found. Pottery found within and around these features was of the Peterborough style, one rim of possible Ebbsfleet style, in a coarse, poorly sorted, flint-tempered fabric.

Close to the Late Neolithic trench was a much bigger, approx 95m long and 1.5m wide, ditch in three sections. This also followed a NW-SE alignment. This was dated to the Early Bronze Age although it too produced pottery of Early and Late Neolithic date. The later CAT excavation to the north of the Wessex Archaeology site produced a number of pits and possible post-holes, some in "groups", as well as linear features. Three linear features found in one trench, aligned SW-NE were found. The most substantial of these, a ditch 1m wide, had been cut on its southern side by a later gully. No datable evidence was recoverd from any of these features. The features pits, post-holes and ditches etc. Associated with the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age were found across an area approximately 160m N-S. (2-7)
