Full Description
Close to a small concentration of Iron Age/Early Romano-British pits part of an occupation site (TR 04 SW 124), a complete inverted saucepan pot (coarse "Belgic" grog-tempered ware of Middle Iron Age date) was recovered measuring 0.1m in diameter and 0.15m deep. The pot was removed whole and its fill excavated under controlled conditions. It was found to contain a silty sand fill with charcoal fragments and a small amount of cremated bone including tooth crowns. The bone was identifed as that of an infant, with the age of death being around six months. The pot appears to have been intentionally buried as part of the mortuary ritual.(1)
